A Journey Like No Other

Witness one of nature's most extraordinary journeys.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is an ongoing, seasonal movement of wildebeest and other grazing animals across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.

Guided by rainfall and fresh grazing, vast herds move through a landscape shaped by open plains, rivers and changing seasons. Their journey creates opportunities to observe animal behaviour and the relationships between wildlife, predators and the environment.

At Safariholic Adventures, your migration safari can be planned around your dates, interests and preferred pace. Understanding the seasonal cycle helps determine which regions may be most suitable for your visit.

Understanding The Migration

A natural cycle shaped by rain, grass and instinct.

The migration is not a single event happening in one place. It is a continuous cycle in which herds travel between seasonal grazing areas throughout the wider ecosystem.

Some periods are associated with the birth of young wildebeest. Other months may bring herds through the western or northern parts of the Serengeti. The landscape and location of the animals can change from year to year.

The best safari plan considers typical seasonal patterns while allowing room for the unpredictability that makes wildlife truly wild.

Moments of Anticipation

In some seasons, herds may gather near rivers in the northern Serengeti. Crossings can be dramatic, but their timing and location are unpredictable.

The Northern Serengeti

When the river becomes part of the journey.

River crossings are among the migration's most talked-about moments. Herds may gather along a riverbank, wait for a period of time and move when conditions allow.

These events unfold naturally. A safari can be planned in a region associated with crossings during a typical seasonal window, but no date, location or crossing can be guaranteed.

A thoughtful migration itinerary allows time for observation without placing pressure on wildlife or promising a particular encounter.
A Guide To The Seasons

When should you plan your migration safari?

The calendar below describes broad seasonal tendencies. The herds respond to rainfall and grazing, so their location can vary significantly between years.

Plan With Flexibility

Your dates help shape the route.

Start with your preferred travel month and the experience you hope to see. The itinerary can then be planned around typical migration patterns and practical travel arrangements.

For the most useful recommendation, share your arrival date, departure date and number of safari days.

Jan – Mar

Southern Serengeti & Ndutu

Often associated with calving season on the southern plains when fresh grazing and rainfall support the herds.

Apr – Jun

Central & Western Areas

Herds may move through central and western parts of the ecosystem as conditions change.

Jul – Oct

Northern Serengeti

Some herds may be in the north, where river crossings can occur during parts of the season.

Nov – Dec

Movement Towards The South

Seasonal rains often encourage the herds to return towards eastern and southern grazing areas.

Important: This is a general guide, not a live herd-location report. Migration timing varies with rainfall and local conditions. River crossings and specific wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Respect The Wild

Let nature set the pace.

Responsible wildlife viewing places animal welfare and the natural environment first. The best encounters are those that allow animals to behave naturally without unnecessary disturbance.

  • Follow park regulations and your guide's instructions.
  • Maintain a respectful distance from wildlife.
  • Never chase, feed or deliberately disturb animals.
  • Keep noise low and leave no litter behind.
  • Allow wildlife to move freely without blocking its path.

What is the Great Wildebeest Migration?
It is the seasonal movement of large herds of wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and other grazing animals, across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.
When is the best time to see the migration?
The best time depends on your preferred experience. The southern plains are commonly associated with calving in the early months of the year, while northern Serengeti areas may offer opportunities to see herds near rivers during parts of the middle and later months.
Are river crossings guaranteed?
No. Herds can wait, change direction or cross at different points. A suitable itinerary can place you in a region associated with crossings, but no specific crossing can be promised.
How many days should I allow?
Four to six days may suit some migration-focused trips, while a longer safari can allow more flexibility. The right duration depends on your flight schedule, route and the region you hope to visit.
Is the migration visible all year?
The migration is an ongoing cycle, but the location and concentration of the herds change throughout the year. Different regions are more relevant at different times.
Can I combine the migration with Ngorongoro?
Yes. A northern Tanzania itinerary may combine Serengeti with Ngorongoro, subject to your travel dates, route and available time.
What should I pack?
Bring neutral-coloured clothing, warm layers for early mornings, comfortable footwear, a hat, sunscreen and binoculars. Camera equipment is optional. Your packing list should suit the season and itinerary.
How do I start planning?
Share your intended travel dates, number of travellers, available days and the migration experience you are interested in through the Plan Your Journey page. These details help shape a suitable itinerary.
